A "bonus review" that dragged on for years: how IronFX blocked client withdrawals

In February 2015, one of the world's largest forex brokers began mass-blocking clients from withdrawing their own money. The official explanation sounded bureaucratically harmless: the company was conducting a "bonus review". In reality, according to a subsequent journalistic investigation and an audit by the Cypriot regulator, the shortfall in client funds within the company's structure reached roughly $176 million.

IronFX Global built a reputation as one of the biggest players in the retail forex market, reporting an annual volume of client transactions of around $1 trillion. The company was registered in Cyprus and fell under the supervision of the local regulator, CySEC, and the scale of the business created an impression of reliability and financial stability.

As early as February 2015, CySEC opened an inquiry into the company amid growing public pressure over a wave of client complaints about withdrawal delays. In August 2015, IronFX publicly explained these delays by saying it was carrying out a "bonus-terms review" — that is, checking whether clients had abused its bonus programmes. According to auditors' assessments, the formula the company used to calculate the sums owed to clients within these "reviews" was unfavourable to the clients themselves and effectively worked in the broker's own favour.

In November 2015, CySEC imposed a fine on the company of just €335,000 as part of a settlement following a review of the ten largest Cypriot investment firms — a sum utterly incommensurate with the scale of the reported $176 million shortfall. The company admitted no wrongdoing and continued operating, over time working under different brands.

Why this mattersA broker's enormous turnover and scale of business are no proof of its financial stability. Phrasing such as a "bonus review" as grounds for delaying the withdrawal of a client's own money is a red flag that should be taken seriously. At Carrara e Associati, we advise documenting every instance of a withdrawal delay in writing and seeking legal advice immediately, rather than waiting for a "review" to drag on for months.
